Recently, I was fortunate to be in Marseille supporting the HK National men’s 15’s team during the 2020 RWC repechage matches. Aside from the wonderful on pitch play of our team, there was a very impressive off field performance from many many former HK International players and officials (both ladies and men) who attended the 2nd HK match versus Kenya. This game was targeted by HKRIPA as the launch pad for our ex-players to attend and they certainly did not let HK down. The Irish pub on the city’s waterfront got a big workout and it was fantastic to see so many former players in attendance.
Congratulations to those who have made this possible (Northy, Dave, Deano and Ruth in particular); as an ex HK player, I certainly loved swapping stories from the past with a mixture of pre and post-1997 Hong Kong players. Rest assured , the great HK spirit is alive and well and the Saturday and Sunday morning provided lots of evidence of evenings well spent !
The HKRU is fully supportive of this initiative and we look forward to building our ex player network in the years to come. HK rugby is an exciting position at present with our current International teams (both 7’s and 15’s) traveling the globe participating in tournaments and test matches on a regular basis. This provides plenty of opportunities for our ex-players who reside in all parts of the world to turn up and support the team together with meeting up with old friends from the playing day
I for one will be an active participant, I urge all of you to make every effort to support and enjoy the association and to encourage fellow past Internationals that you are in contact with to join.
